What is thermal throttling?

Thermal throttling happens when PC parts slow down because they are too hot. This guide explains the signs, causes, and fixes.

What does thermal throttling mean?

Thermal throttling happens when a CPU or GPU gets hot enough that it reduces speed to protect itself. This keeps the part within safe limits, but it lowers performance.

You may notice lower FPS, sudden stutters, fan noise, or a PC that starts fast and slows down after a few minutes.

What causes it?

Common causes include dust buildup, poor airflow, weak coolers, dried thermal paste, blocked vents, hot rooms, or laptop cooling limits.

Small cases and laptops are more sensitive because there is less space to move heat away from components.

How to check for it

Use monitoring software to watch CPU and GPU temperatures and clock speeds while gaming or running a workload. If temperatures rise and clock speeds drop at the same time, throttling may be happening.

Also listen for fans running at maximum speed and look for performance that gets worse over time.

How to reduce thermal throttling

Clean dust filters and fans, improve case airflow, replace old thermal paste when appropriate, make sure coolers are mounted properly, and avoid blocking vents.

Sometimes lowering power limits or graphics settings can also reduce heat while keeping the PC smoother overall.

Prenew offers the right solution for every need

Choosing around thermal throttling is easier when the whole PC is balanced, tested, and matched to the way you actually use it.

  • Bronze Level: Ideal for everyday use, school work, office tasks, and light games.
  • Silver Level: A strong value choice for popular games and smooth general performance.
  • Gold Level: Better suited for higher settings, heavier multitasking, and more demanding games.
  • Platinum Level: Built for users who want high performance for demanding games, creative work, or long-term headroom.

Prenew's refurbished PCs are checked before resale, so you can upgrade responsibly without guessing whether the parts work well together.
