What is thermal throttling?

Thermal throttling happens when a CPU or GPU gets hot enough that it reduces speed to protect itself. This keeps the part within safe limits, but it lowers performance.

You may notice lower FPS, sudden stutters, fan noise, or a PC that starts fast and slows down after a few minutes.

Common causes include dust buildup, poor airflow, weak coolers, dried thermal paste, blocked vents, hot rooms, or laptop cooling limits.

Small cases and laptops are more sensitive because there is less space to move heat away from components.

Use monitoring software to watch CPU and GPU temperatures and clock speeds while gaming or running a workload. If temperatures rise and clock speeds drop at the same time, throttling may be happening.

Also listen for fans running at maximum speed and look for performance that gets worse over time.

Clean dust filters and fans, improve case airflow, replace old thermal paste when appropriate, make sure coolers are mounted properly, and avoid blocking vents.

Sometimes lowering power limits or graphics settings can also reduce heat while keeping the PC smoother overall.
