How to prepare your PC before selling it

Before selling a PC, you should protect your data and make the device easy to inspect. This guide explains backups, resets, cleaning, and accessories.

Back up your data first

Before you sell any computer, copy your important files somewhere safe. Use an external drive, cloud storage, or another computer.

Check documents, desktop files, photos, videos, game saves, browser exports, and any software license information you may need later.

Sign out and remove personal accounts

Sign out of Windows, browser profiles, game launchers, cloud storage, email apps, and messaging apps. Remove saved passwords and unlink the PC from services where needed.

This protects your privacy and prevents the next owner from running into account locks.

Reset or wipe the PC

Use Windows reset options or a clean installation to remove personal data. If the PC contains sensitive information, consider a more thorough drive wipe before reinstalling.

Make sure the PC still boots properly afterward, because buyers will want to confirm that it works.

Clean and document the condition

Gently remove dust from the outside, clean accessible vents, and wipe surfaces. Do not use liquid inside the PC or take apart anything you are not comfortable handling.

Take clear photos, gather power cables and accessories, and write down the specs and known issues honestly.
